The short answer: fall and winter
The best time to install hurricane shutters in Orlando is roughly October through February. Installers have open schedules, permit offices move faster, product lead times are shorter, and you will have everything in place well before hurricane season starts June 1. The worst time is March through May, when everyone rushes to beat the season and every step of the process slows down.
The seasonal calendar
Fall (October–November): the sweet spot. Hurricane season is winding down, demand drops, and installers are hungry for work. Permits move quickly. If you start now, your shutters are done before the holidays with zero stress. This is also the ideal time to get a professional inspection of existing shutters — any worn parts get replaced during the slow season instead of during a spring panic.
Winter (December–February): still great. The slowest stretch of the year for installers. You will likely get the fastest scheduling and the most attentive service. Product manufacturers are also at their quickest. If your budget is tight after the holidays, ask about phased installs — many homeowners protect the most vulnerable openings in winter and finish the rest in spring.
Spring (March–May): the rush. Everyone who put it off is now calling at once. Expect longer waits for quotes, slower permits, stretched product lead times, and fully booked install crews. You can still get it done — but start early in spring, not late. If you are getting quotes in March, ask each installer for their honest install date in writing before you commit, so a May promise does not quietly become July.
Hurricane season (June–November): possible but painful. Installs still happen, but scheduling is tight, and if a storm threatens, everything pauses while crews handle emergency work. Installing during the season means gambling that no storm arrives before your install date.
Why timing affects more than convenience
Permits: building departments in Orlando and Orange County get flooded with applications each spring. A permit that clears in days in November can take weeks in April. Our permits guide has the details.
Product lead times: custom colors and motorized systems are made to order. Off-season orders ship faster; peak-season orders queue up. Our timeline guide breaks down each stage.
Your negotiating position: in the slow season, installers compete for your business. In the spring rush, you take what you can get. Getting multiple written quotes — see our installer guide — is easier when companies have time to talk.
HOA approvals: if your architectural committee meets monthly, a spring application can easily slip a month. Starting in fall or winter removes the time pressure. See our HOA guide.
Special cases
Buying a home? If you are closing in spring or summer, get shutter quotes during the inspection period and schedule the install for right after closing — or negotiate a credit and install in the fall.
New construction? Have shutters installed as the house is being finished. The crew is already there, the permit can ride along, and you move into a protected home.
Storm damaged your old shutters? Do not wait for the "right" season — get repairs or replacement going immediately. The next storm does not care about the calendar.
Selling your home? Code-approved, permitted shutters are a selling point in Florida. Installing in the off-season before a spring listing means the feature is ready for listing photos.
The one rule that beats the calendar
The best time to install shutters is before you need them. A homeowner who installs in the "wrong" month of August is infinitely better protected than one waiting for the "perfect" November that never comes. If a storm is in the forecast and you have no protection, ask about emergency shutter service right now.
